John Edgar Montgomery passed away peacefully, Surronded by family the evening of October 25th, 2023. John was born October 25th 1949 to August R. and Oma M. Arnold Montgomery in Terre Haute, Indiana. He grew up on a farm in Honey Creek Township in southwest Indiana. He was avid in 4H and the industrial arts club and had a dream to attend Sams Technical Institute to become an electronics engineer. He graduated from Honey Creek High School in 1967.
John joined the U.S. Naval Reserves in 1970 as a communications technician in Terre Haute. In 1971 he was transferred to the naval base in Pensacola, Florida where he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was discharged from the naval reserve in 1974.
It was during his time in the naval reserve that he started going to college first at Indiana State University and then transferring to Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. It was in Rexburg where he would meet his future sweetheart and bride. He graduated from Ricks college with an associates degree and left for Brigham Young university in Provo, Utah. During his tenure at BYU he joined the Army reserves. While attending BYU he dated his future wife Lorraine and they were married in the Provo temple in 1974. In the meantime, they had two sons, born in 1975 and 1976, to them while attending BYU. John graduated from BYU with a bachelors in Agronomy in 1977.
After graduating from BYU he moved his family back to his hometown of Terre Haute. It was here that John and Lorraine had two more children, another boy in 1979 and a girl in 1981. They lived in Terre Haute for seven years until John was transferred to Bryan, Ohio with the Army reserves in 1984. They lived in Bryan for a year and then transferred to Lima, Ohio where they spent the next 14 years of their lives having one more son in 1986.
John was officially diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1991 and retired from the Army Reserves in 1992. He was always active in the church and loved sharing the gospel of Christ with those who would listen. He always helped those in need and was known as a man who would give the shirt off his back, as well as a man of great faith with a love for Jesus Christ. During his time in college and throughout his life John endeavored in searching out his family's roots by doing family history. It was a great passion of his.
John is preceded in death by his sister Aileen, his father August R. Montgomery and his mother Oma M. Montgomery. He is survived by his brother Murry Montgomery of Brazil, Indiana, his sister Patricia Miller of Big Fork, Montana, and his youngest brother HR Montgomery of Tampa, Florida.
He leaves behind a devoted wife, Lorraine Nyahay Montgomery of Wickenburg, Arizona, his oldest son August Montgomery of Wickenburg, Arizona, a son John H. Montgomery of Salt Lake City, Utah, another son Joseph Montgomery of Idaho Falls, Idaho, a daughter Ariel Woods of Idaho Falls, Idaho and his youngest son Armon Montgomery of Midland, Texas.
He leaves behind 6 grandchildren, Mary Montgomery O'Barr, Alexandra, Ammon and Natalie Montgomery, Ryker and Sadie Woods and 3 great grandchildren Jacob Jr. and Adam O'Barr and Oliver R Belanger Montgomery, whom he loved and enjoyed interacting with when they visited.
There will be no viewing of the decedents body. Funeral services and burial will be held on October 13th, 2023 at 1 pm at the National Veterans Cemetery located at 23029 North Cave Creek Rd,, Phoenix, AZ 85024.
Memorial donations can be made in John's name to any VFW chapter nationwide or to the Wounded Warriors Project.
