Bill was raised on a large farm operated by his father and learned about hard work caring for a large dairy herd and hundreds of hogs and beef cattle, as well as operating machinery to raise and harvest crops. Bill enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in September 1944 prior to high school graduation, and enrolled in Engineering School at Purdue University. He was called to active duty in June 1945 and served in the Air Force until discharged in January 1947.
